For all of our work developing an alternative to OTC sunscreens over the past few years, it is actually bug spray that I despise. The thought of spraying those chemicals (especially DEET) all over my children has always given me the heebie jeebies, to the point that I stopped using it and made my kids wear long pants and suffer through the heat and humidity of the summer. UGH. Meanest mommy in the world!

That’s why when we at BBO finally developed a mixture of essential oils that actually WORKED to prevent bug bites, I was doing my happy dance. In the backyard, after dusk, in shorts!

Here are 4 reasons why our Bug BeBare Bug Spray is so awesome:

• Contains 39% active ingredients – WAY more active ingredients than other organic insect repellents
• Contains 25% Neem Oil –The Neem tree has a long history of use in Indian culture and Ayurvedic medicine. The Neem tree is known as Muarubaini in East Africa which means“the tree of 40”, because it is said to treat 40 different diseases.  In India it is known as “the curer of all ailments". It has long been known that Neem can act as an insect repellent – it was traditional practice to add a few Neem leaves to rice stored in homes to repel insects and other similar creatures. It’s one drawback? It has a very strong scent. At BBO we experimented with different concentrations of Neem Oil in our bug spray until we found one that worked AND wasn’t overpowering.
• Contains Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus – found to be as effective as low concentrations of DEET.
• Contains the ‘kitchen sink’ of essential oils (Citronella, Peppermint, Tea Tree, Cinnamon, Lemongrass, Rosemary, Cedarwood, and Clove Bud) to help fight off different types of biting insects. That’s because Florida bugs are not the same as Michigan bugs (who knew?) and we wanted to have a product that protects you wherever you happen to be.
